3 Ways to Get Back to Your Life After Surgery

We’ll let you in on a secret: what happens after your surgery has everything to do with what happens before your surgery. When it comes to improving surgery recovery, it’s all about taking proactive, proven steps before you go under under the knife to ensure you recover as fast and strong as possible. Today, then, we’re talking our top 3 tips for getting back to life after surgery. Read on…and get ready for a great recovery!

  1. Prepare for your recovery before going under the knife.

A great recovery starts with proper preparation. There are three major steps you can take for improving surgery recovery

  • Make the behavioral changes you need to: Whether it’s quitting smoking or starting to exercise, start making the behavioral changes you need to in the months and weeks leading up to your surgery. Remember: surgery is like an athletic event: you want to show up in as strong and healthy of a state as possible in order to decrease your risk of complications and increase your chance for a great recovery.

  • Do your research:  Surgery can be scary—so it’s natural to want to avoid doing research beforehand. But, the better prepared and informed you are, the better your chances are for improving surgery recovery through some of the information you pick up along the way. Educate yourself about what your recovery could be like by talking to your doctor and doing your own research. Then, put steps in place to prepare for that recovery experience.

  1. Have a support system in place.

Setting up a support system is an absolutely crucial step for improving surgery recovery and getting back to your life.

  • Ask for help: If you’re going to need help during your recovery, be sure to ask the people who can help you before getting home from your procedure. It’s natural to not want to feel like a burden, but the best way to make your recovery a seamless one for both you and those around you is to be clear about your needs in as far advance as possible so everyone has ample time to plan.
  • Create a schedule: Create a clear calendar, list, or schedule to help your support system along the way. Write down anything you may need them to do and when, any important information they’ll need to have (the location of the surgery center, the pharmacy you use, your surgeon’s name, your home alarm code, etc.). Make sure you’ve listed out your needs—as well as the people, places, and things they need to know about.

  1. Give your body what it needs.

There’s no more important surgery-prep step than taking care of your body. Below are three main things you can give your body for an improved recovery.

  • Time: Whether it’s taking time off of work or taking a few extra days before getting back to activity, make sure you give your body the time it needs to heal. Any procedure—no matter how minor it may seem—puts a major amount of stress on the body. Even if you’re feeling great a day or two after, force yourself to take it easy, as getting back to activity too quick can often result in an extended recovery period later on.

  • Rehab and exercise: From a full-blown physical therapy plan to light at-home exercise, talk to your doctor before your surgery to understand what your rehab plan should look like. Order any tools you might need (like resistance bands) beforehand and be prepared to ease back into activity slowly and on a flexible schedule (you never know what your body will and won’t allow after surgery).

  • Nutrition and hydration: Modern medical research shows that proper presurgery nutrition plays a major role in helping you get back to life after a procedure. Rather than the old-school fasting from midnight approach, talk to your doctor about drinking ClearFast in the hours leading up to your procedure for a safer surgery and enhanced recovery. (Psst…while ClearFast was developed by an anesthesiologist for the hours leading up to your procedure, our all-new plant protein drink, CF Protein, is specifically designed for the days and weeks leading up to your procedure. Keep an eye out for CF Protein’s upcoming release!)

What to Do Before Surgery: 3 Pro Surgery Prep Tips for an Easier Procedure & Enhanced Recovery

What to Do Before Surgery: 3 Pro Surgery Prep Tips for an Easier Procedure & Enhanced Recovery

Going under the knife can be scary—but with some helpful surgery prep tips, it doesn’t have to be. From scheduling your procedure for the proper time , to preparing your home, to properly hydrating before surgery, there are a few simple things you can do to make your procedure a million times less stressful—and to get a major leg up on recovery. Today, then, we’re breaking down our top three surgery prep tips to ensure a smooth and seamless experience. Read on, and get ready to go under—and wake up from—anesthesia like a seasoned pro!

  1. Have a list of questions prepared for your preop appointment.

This one is key. We’ve all been there—you’ve had a preop appointment scheduled for a few weeks and have a great idea of everything you need to ask your doctor…but you freeze up and forget important questions when you’re in the moment. With so much on your mind and your nerves running at an all-time high, it’s almost impossible to keep a clear head and remember to ask every one of those all-important questions at your preop appointment. One of our pro surgery prep tips, then, is to prepare a list of questions ahead of time and take diligent notes during your preop appointment. Some questions you might consider asking are:

  • What time do I need to arrive for my procedure?
  • Will I need to stop any medications I’m taking before my procedure? If so, how far in advance should I stop taking them?
  • Can I drink a preop beverage instead of fasting from midnight so I’m not hungry and dehydrated?
  • Will I be getting any medications prescribed to me to take after surgery? If so, may I have that prescription now so I can fill it in advance?
  • What type of anesthesia will be administered?
  • Is it OK to workout before my procedure?
  • What are the possible risks or complications of the procedure?
  • What can I expect from the recovery process and when can I expect to return to normal activities?
  1. Make a backup plan, fill your prescriptions and prepare your house.

You’ll need someone to drive you home after your surgery—but what happens if the person you chose gets ill, has a family emergency or even just gets stuck in traffic? As one of our pro surgery prep tips, we always recommend having a backup plan in place just in case. Ask a friend or family member to be your backup driver and caretaker should your original surgery pal have something unexpected arise.

Once you’ve secured your backup plan, it’s important to properly prep for your homecoming. You’ll want to fill any post-op prescriptions ahead of time so you’re not stuck waiting for them when you need them most. Then, make sure your house is conducive to your preop state—if you’re going under for knee surgery and live in a two-story house, for example, you won’t be able to tackle those stairs for quite some time…so make sure everything you’ll need in the immediate future (clothing changes, toiletries, pillows, etc.) is downstairs in one easy-to-access place. And, no matter the type of surgery you’re having, chances are you’ll be resting on the couch for at least a day or two, so make sure you have everything you need within an arm’s reach (your laptop, charging cords, television remotes, books, pillows, blankets, etc.—even a cooler with water and other items is a great idea to have nearby).

  1. Nourish and hydrate with ClearFast in place of old-school fasting-from-midnight.

We saved our most helpful surgery prep tip for last. There are a number of reasons that fasting-from-midnight is an outdated practice (you can read more about why doctors are recommending patients no longer fast before surgery here)—but the overarching research is clear: sending patients into a stressful procedure without proper hydration and nutrition is counterproductive and even dangerous. Instead of fasting before surgery, medical professionals and hospitals across the globe are recommending  patients drink a clear and colorless, complex carb-rich preop drink like ClearFast. Just be sure you confirm with your doctor that ClearFast is right for you! If she or he gives you the go-ahead, drinking ClearFast before your procedure has a number of benefits for your pre-op experience, your safety during surgery and your recovery, including:

  • Reduced Hunger & Anxiety: Rich in complex carbs and free of simple sugars and colored dyes, the ClearFast preop drink reduces the stress and anxiety that come along with being starved and dehydrated before surgery. In fact, in a large controlled study, patients in the pre-op area who drank ClearFast were 5.5-6.5 times more likely to describe themselves as “comfortable” than those who underwent traditional fasting from midnight.

  • Easier IV “Sticks”: We all hate being poked and prodded with IVs. And you may notice it’s even worse right before you go under the knife. That’s because dehydration from old-school fasting-from-midnight leads to reduced blood flow, which can often mean it takes nurses multiple, painful IV sticks to find a vein. Countless ClearFast customers report easier, pain-free and one-time-only needle sticks as a result of using our preop drink in place of completely fasting.

  • Reduced Post-Op Nausea and Vomiting: Fasting before surgery is largely responsible for the nausea and vomiting so many patients experience after waking up from anesthesia. ClearFast customers who, in the past experienced nausea and vomiting after waking from surgery, report that taking the ClearFast preop drink completely eliminated this problem for them.

Preparing Your Patients for Surgery with the ClearFast Enhanced Recovery Drink: Your Top 5 Questions Answered

Preparing Your Patients for Surgery with the ClearFast Enhanced Recovery Drink: Your Top 5 Questions Answered

With traditional NPO on its way out and pre-surgery carbohydrate loading taking its place, we’re now on the forefront of a major shift in the way the medical industry looks at surgery prep. This shift means that our team often gets asked a number of great questions about safely preparing patients for surgery with our enhanced recovery drink. We understand that, as medical professionals, your number-one goal is to ensure safe and effective surgical outcomes and overall patient satisfaction—which is why, today, we wanted to take some time to answer the top five questions we hear from physicians and healthcare centers. Read on for answers to our most common medical-pro FAQs.

1. We’ve always done NPO. Why should I be ClearFasting my patients now?

More and more medical research is pointing to the fact that pre-op carbohydrate loading with a clear, complex carb-rich beverage leads to safer procedures and greater patient satisfaction. There are a number of science-backed reasons you should consider replacing NPO with fasting with an enhanced recovery drink instead, including:

  • Evidence-Based vs Non-Evidence Based: It’s important to keep in mind that NPO was never an evidence-based practice. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Programs (ERAS®), evidence-based programs borrowed from Europe and the UK, are becoming increasingly popular in luminary hospitals across the United States. These programs are comprised of 17 key elements for perioperative patient management, which, when combined, work to ensure a better surgical outcomes, enhanced recovery after surgery and increased patient satisfaction overall. One of the most important of the 17 elements is preoperative carbohydrate loading using a compliant ERAS® drink like ClearFast in place of NPO. (You can read more about choosing the right ERAS® drink for better surgical outcomes here.)
  • Higher Patient Satisfaction, Reduced PONV, Shorter Hospital Stays: In a large controlled study, patients in the pre-op area who drank ClearFast were 5.5-6.5 times more likely to describe themselves as “comfortable” than their cohorts who underwent traditional fasting from midnight. In addition to creating a more comfortable pre-surgery experience for patients, fluid fasting with the ClearFast enhanced recovery drink reduces a patient’s risk of PONV, ultimately decreasing the length of hospital stay.

2. Can my diabetic patients have ClearFast?

Any medical pro knows that preparing a diabetic for surgery is far more nuanced than preparing a healthy patient for surgery. Pre-op carb-loading for diabetics is actually one of the safest, most effective ways to manage blood sugar levels before, during and after surgery—which results in a number of benefits, including:

  • It reduces a diabetic patient’s risk of pre-op complications: Diabetic patients are often the most adversely affected by prolonged fasting, as a prolonged fast can ultimately send their body into a catabolic state—which, for a diabetic, can lead to serious complications like hyperglycemia and even ketoacidosis. Rather than ignoring a diabetic’s unique dietary needs as traditional NPO does, a fluid fast with the ClearFast enhanced recovery drink works with a diabetic’s dietary needs, ultimately protecting their critical glycogen stores.
  • It reduces a diabetic patient’s risk of postoperative insulin resistance (PIR): Numerous studies have found that pre-op carb-loading with a complex carb-rich, clear preop drink like ClearFast can reduce a diabetic’s risk of post-op insulin resistance and post-op infections, as well as reduce the occurrence of PONV—all of which make managing blood-sugar difficult, posing particular danger for those with diabetes. (You can read more about preparing your diabetic patients for surgery with ClearFast here.)

3. What about patients with gastroparesis or GERD?

We typically recommend patients finish their last bottle of ClearFast two hours prior to their surgery time; however we’ve modified these recommendations for those with delayed gastric emptying so as to avoid the risk of aspiration. Instead of a final dose completed two hours before surgery, we recommend you push the final dose to four hours before surgery. Again, as a physician, you always have the best, most informed guidance for your individual patient’s gastric emptying times.

4. Can my pediatric patients use the ClearFast enhanced recovery drink?

Absolutely! Pediatric patients are often the hardest to fast, which is why ClearFast is such a great option to keep them happy, hydrated and nourished before surgery. A pediatric patient’s dosing, of course, will differ from that of an adult’s depending on their weight and age. Take a look at our ClearFast Pediatric Dosing Chart for specific dosage recommendations to determine the best way to prep your pediatric patients for surgery with the ClearFast enhanced recovery drink.

5. You talk a lot about infection rates. How can ClearFast help with that?

NPO induces a catabolic state wherein the normal relationship between insulin and glucose are uncoupled. To compensate for the lack of “fuel” brought on by fasting, the body uses up its critical glycogen stores and then begins to breakdown fat and muscle as alternative energy sources. Insulin levels rise in response to rising glucose levels, but target cells (including muscle) fail to respond to it. In effect, patients become insulin-resistant. When patients are insulin-resistant after surgery and have a fresh surgical incision, the chance for infection greatly increases, as the “sweet environment” invites microbial colonization.  Fluid fasting with the ClearFast enhanced recovery drink, on the other hand, effectively protects or spares critical glycogen stores in the immediate pre-op window and stabilizes blood sugars—reducing a patient’s risk of hyperglycemia and any associated infection. Ultimately, by reducing a patient’s risk of postoperative insulin resistance or PIR, ClearFast helps to reduce the risk of surgical infection.

I Was Told to Fast—So What Makes Drinking ClearFast Before Surgery Safe?

I Was Told to Fast—So What Makes Drinking ClearFast Before Surgery Safe?

We can’t lie—we’re pretty excited for today’s topic. It’s a question we get asked all of the time: My doctor told me to fast, so what makes drinking ClearFast before surgery safe? Today, we’re answering that all-too-common question and so much more. We’ll cover:

  • Why you were told to fast before surgery
  • What you can’t have before surgery
  • What you can have before surgery
  • What makes drinking ClearFast before surgery safe
  • How drinking ClearFast before surgery makes for easier, less stressful procedures

Now, let’s dig in…

Why was I told to fast before surgery?

Fasting before surgery is a non-evidence based practice that dates back over 150 years. It comes from the fact that having food in your stomach during surgery can cause you to aspirate (aspiration is the entry of your stomach contents/food into the lower respiratory tract and lungs, which can be very dangerous during surgery). Because of this, medical professionals implemented the sweeping “no food or drink after midnight” rule.

Because of this, you can’t have the following before surgery:

  • Solid Foods
  • Colored Dyes
  • Fats or Proteins

Is fasting before surgery still practiced?

The answer is both yes and no (sorry, folks). While you’re not allowed to have any of the things we previously listed (solid foods, colored dyes, and fats/proteins), more and more modern medical research has proven that patients should have a complex-carb-rich clear fluid before surgery in place of forgoing all food and drink. There are a few reasons for this shift:

  • Patients who drink clear fluid before surgery actually have a reduced risk of aspiration as they have emptier stomachs than those who don’t eat or drink anything. (When you don’t eat or drink anything, it can cause a build-up of gastric acids in your stomach.)
  • Surgery is extremely physically taxing on your body. To enter anesthesia completely starved and dehydrated is akin to running a marathon completely starved and dehydrated. It just doesn’t set you up for success.

In short, more medical professionals are advising patients follow a carbohydrate fluid fast by drinking ClearFast before surgery as opposed to following the old-school, outdated fast of “nothing after midnight.”

What makes drinking ClearFast before surgery safe?

Modern medical research points to the fact that patients can have certain liquids up to two hours before their surgery. The liquid should be rich in complex carbs (as opposed to simple sugars like you’ll find in Gatorade and other sports drinks) and it must be absolutely clear (as having colored dyes in your system can interfere with the safety of your procedure).

ClearFast is safe for surgery because it:

  • Is not a solid food
  • Is completely clear and colorless
  • Contains NO fats or proteins

What benefits will I receive from drinking ClearFast before surgery?

Drinking ClearFast before surgery offers a number benefits that ultimately lead to safer, less stressful procedures and enhanced recovery, including:

  • Hydration and Nutrition: Dehydration and the electrolyte imbalance it can cause are things you want to avoid in general—but certainly before anesthesia. Sending your body into surgery is essentially like sending it to battle: it needs proper nutrition and hydration in order to best prepare for the inevitable stress of anesthesia.
  • Easier IV “Sticks”: Dehydration leads to reduced blood flow, which can mean multiple painful IV sticks. Many ClearFast customers report easier, pain-free and one-time-only needle sticks as a result of working the ClearFast preop drink into their surgery prep routine.
  • Reduced Post-Op Nausea and Vomiting: Traditional fasting from midnight is largely responsible for the nausea and vomiting many patients experience after undergoing anesthesia. Time and time again, ClearFast customers who, in the past experienced nausea and vomiting upon waking from surgery, report that drinking the ClearFast preop drink completely eliminated this problem.
  • Reduced Anxiety and Emotional Stress: Heading into surgery is never fun—especially when you’re tired, starved and thirsty. ClearFast works to reduce the stress and anxiety that often accompany going under. In fact, in a large controlled study, patients in the pre-op area who drank ClearFast were 5.5-6.5 times more likely to describe themselves as “comfortable” than their cohorts who underwent traditional fasting from midnight.

What if my doctor still says no food or drink after midnight?

Overall, more and more research is pointing to the fact that doctors should stop following the old-school “no food or drink after midnight” rule and, instead, should prep patients for surgery with a safe, clear, complex-carb rich liquid like ClearFast. Keep in mind, though, that you should always follow your physician’s specific instructions before surgery. If your doctor advises you to avoid all liquids after midnight, be sure to ask her about ClearFast (you can read more about talking to your doctor about ClearFast here). If she any questions about our preop drink  at all, you can direct her to the medical pros section of the ClearFast site.

Liquid Fasting for Orthopedics Patients, Diabetics and More: The Unique Benefits of ClearFast for Different Types of Surgery

Liquid Fasting for Orthopedics Patients, Diabetics and More: The Unique Benefits of ClearFast for Different Types of Surgery

Fluid fasting before surgery offers a number of valuable benefits for patients across the board—like reduced post-op nausea and vomiting, and a less stressful surgery experience—but today we wanted to break down the specific benefits of fluid fasting as they apply to different service lines. From liquid fasting for orthopedics patients to liquid fasting for diabetics, preparing for surgery with a complex carb-rich preop drink like ClearFast provides a distinct set of benefits for different types of procedures. Today, we’ll cover:

  • How ClearFast reduces an orthopedics patient’s risk of infection
  • How ClearFast makes for safer surgeries for diabetics
  • How ClearFast helps to hydrate and nourish dehydrated colorectal & colonoscopy patients

Now, let’s dig in…

Liquid Fasting for Orthopedics Patients

The unique problem: Increased risk of Infection

Fasting from midnight, which was never evidence-based, induces a catabolic state where the normal relationship between insulin and glucose are uncoupled. To compensate for the lack of “fuel” brought on by fasting, the body uses up its critical glycogen stores and then begins to breakdown fat and muscle as alternative energy sources. Insulin levels rise in response to rising glucose levels, but target cells (including muscle) fail to respond to it. In effect, patients become insulin resistant.

Following surgery, this post-op insulin resistance (PIR) can translate into hyperglycemia, which increases the chance of surgical site infections, as the “sweet environment” invites microbial colonization. Orthopedic patients are at an especially high risk of surgical site infection and joint infections because of the added vulnerability of blood supply to injured or surgically manipulated bones and joints—in addition to the inherent risk associated with implantation technology. The two main potential infection sites are broken bones and the area of surgical incision.

The solution ClearFast provides: Reduced risk of Hyperglycemia and Infection

Liquid fasting for orthopedics patients assures nutrition, hydration and maintenance of electrolytes. It effectively protects or spares critical glycogen stores. Nourishing orthopedic patients with a preop drink like ClearFast in the immediate pre-op window will stabilize blood sugars—ultimately reducing a patient’s risk of hyperglycemia and any associated infection.

Liquid Fasting for Diabetics

The unique problem: Starving a diabetic patient before surgery is extremely dangerous

A prolonged fast ultimately sends a patient’s body into a catabolic state (the body uses up its glycogen stores when it needs energy before surgery and then moves on to breaking down healthy fat and muscle tissue as an alternative energy source). This isn’t ideal for the average healthy patient—let alone for someone managing diabetes. For diabetics, this catabolic state can lead to serious complications—like a diabetic arriving in preop with complications like hyperglycemia and even ketoacidosis. In essence, a prolonged fast before surgery completely ignores—rather than works with—a diabetics’ unique dietary needs, which creates an extremely dangerous environment for surgery. (You can read more about preparing for surgery with diabetes here.)

The solution ClearFast provides: Effectively manages blood sugar levels before, during, and after surgery

Preparing diabetics for surgery with the complex carbs they need for energy helps to ensure their body isn’t using up all of those ever-important glycogen stores. This ultimately helps a diabetic proactively manage his or her blood-sugar levels (rather than being at the mercy of the “from midnight” fast)—reducing their risk of dangerous conditions like pre-op hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis and post-op insulin resistance.

Liquid Fasting for Colorectal/Colonoscopies

The unique problem: Extreme dehydration before surgery + foul-tasting prep liquid

Colonoscopies are one of the most common procedures in the U.S.—and preparing for one is a unique challenge for patients. A pre-op fast from midnight starves and dehydrates every patient, but colonoscopy patients are especially taxed due to the stressful effects of colonoscopy prep. With a prep routine that flushes fluid from the body, patients lose nearly all electrolytes—which is extremely dehydrating and dangerous. Add in the fact that the colonoscopy prep liquid tastes terrible, and you’ve got a recipe for an unnecessarily negative and stressful patient experience.

The solution ClearFast provides: Medical-grade hydration for colonoscopy patients and an easy way to drink the prep-liquid

Clear, colorless and chock-full of complex carbs (as opposed to dyed sports drinks that contain simple sugars), the ClearFast preop drink is a safe solution for properly hydrating and nourishing colorectal and colonoscopy patients. Drinking ClearFast before surgery—especially for colorectal patients undergoing unpleasant prep—assures partial restoration of electrolytes. Easy to drink and delicious when chilled, ClearFast is also a great option for patients struggling to drink the foul-tasting colonoscopy prep liquid, as they can “chase” the prep liquid with the better tasting ClearFast preop drink. Plus, drinking ClearFast before a colonoscopy increases comfort before the procedure and reduces a patient’s risk of post-op nausea and vomiting after their procedure.

———

Overall, whether it’s liquid fasting for orthopedics patients, diabetics or colorectal/colonoscopy patients, preparing patients with a complex carb-rich preop beverage like ClearFast can successfully address each of the unique challenges and inherent risks associated with a number of procedures across an array of medical fields. Whether you’re a patient looking to properly nourish and hydrate before surgery, or a medical provider seeking safer surgeries and better surgical outcomes, you can order your ClearFast Preop Drink here to help you achieve surgery success! And, as always, reach out to the ClearFast team at support@drinkcf.com if you have any questions about our preop drink at all.

How to Use ClearFast: Our Different Bottle-Count Recommendations and What They Mean

How to Use ClearFast: Our Different Bottle-Count Recommendations and What They Mean

So you’ve heard all about how ClearFast helps to enhance recovery after surgery, reduce your risk of post-op nausea and vomiting, and make for a less stressful surgery experience overall—but now you’re wondering how to use ClearFast properly to reap its benefits? Not to worry! Today, we’re breaking down the ins-and-outs of our different options for using ClearFast before your surgery. We’ll cover:

  • Chilling ClearFast before you drink
  • How to follow our “Traditional” Three-Bottle Protocol
  • How to follow our “Easy” Two-Bottle Protocol
  • How to follow our “Iron-Clad” Four-Bottle Protocol
  • How to follow our Four-Bottle Protocol for Colonoscopy Prep

Now, let’s dig in…

Keep in mind that, while we offer some basic guidelines below, you should always follow your doctor’s specific instructions for using our preop drink.

PRO TIP: Start by Chilling It

When it comes to how to use ClearFast, there are a number of different recommendations you can follow, but, no matter your doctor’s specific instructions, we always recommend putting ClearFast in your refrigerator to let it chill first. Chilling our preop drink makes it all that much more tasty and easy to drink. So, as soon as you have your ClearFast in hand, pop it into the fridge to get it nice and cool before it’s time to drink!

The “Traditional” Three-Bottle Protocol

Drinking three bottles of ClearFast prior to your surgery is the traditional method recommended by Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Programs (or ERAS® Programs) in hospitals across the U.S. You’ll typically want to take your first bottle of ClearFast 12 hours before your surgery, your second bottle 7 hours before your surgery, and have your your third bottle finished 2 hours before your surgery. So, if your surgery is at 12 p.m., your schedule for drinking clearfast would be:

The “Easy” Two-Bottle Protocol

Drinking two bottles of ClearFast is a common way to prep for surgery as it can sometimes be a bit easier than the three-bottle protocol. (The two-bottle protocol doesn’t require you wake up in the middle of the night to drink ClearFast, as can be the case with the three-bottle protocol, depending on the time of your procedure.) When it comes to how to use ClearFast for our two-bottle protocol, your schedule will be to drink your first bottle 12 hours prior to your procedure, and to have your second bottle completed two hours prior to your procedure. So, if your surgery is at 12 p.m., your schedule for drinking ClearFast would be:

The Iron-Clad Four-Bottle Protocol

For those looking for the absolute best way to ensure they’re offsetting the terrible dehydrating effects of surgery and surgery prep, drinking four bottles of ClearFast is the way to go. Our four-bottle protocol ensures for maximum medical-grade hydration before, during, and after your procedure—ultimately leading to less stressful procedures and enhanced recovery after surgery. You’d follow the same procedure as with our three-bottle protocol, but add an additional ClearFast on after you wake from your procedure. So, for a 12 p.m. procedure, you would use ClearFast as follows:

  • 1st bottle: 12 a.m. the night prior to surgery
  • 2nd bottle: 5 a.m. the day of surgery
  • 3rd bottle: Complete by 10 a.m. the day of surgery
  • 4th bottle: Drink after surgery

The Four-Bottle Protocol for Colonoscopy Prep:

For those undergoing a colonoscopy, we recommend following our four-bottle protocol (unless your medical provider says otherwise, of course). If your colonoscopy were scheduled for 12 p.m., your schedule would be as follows:

——-

Overall, drinking ClearFast as part of your surgery prep routine is a sure-fire way to make your surgery less stressful and to get a major leg up on recovery. Head to our Drinking Instructions page for a custom drinking scheduled calculated based upon your exact surgery time. As always, though, talk to your medical provider about ClearFast before your surgery or procedure and be sure follow her specific instructions for how to use ClearFast properly and effectively.

Staying Healthy While Traveling: 5 Pro Tips for Your Summer Trips

Staying Healthy While Traveling: 5 Pro Tips for Your Summer Trips

Ah, summer travel—we wait all year for that coveted beach time or that much-needed spa trip, but we’d be lying if we said getting to our destination was a walk in the park. With airports chock-full of germs and planes packed with pathogens, staying healthy while traveling is the realest struggle of them all. To help you on your quest for a vacation sans sneezes and sore throats, then, we’ve broken down our top five tips for staying healthy while traveling this summer below. Read on…and get ready to tackle that upcoming trip armed with all the knowledge you need to stay healthy, hydrated and strong as ever!

  1. Hydrate Before You Fly

What in the world does staying hydrated have to do with avoiding sore throats and other ailments while embarking on summer travel? Turns out, a whole lot. Getting and staying hydrated before you hop on that plane is absolutely key for staying healthy while traveling. The pressurized cabin on planes means the air around you is super dry, which ultimately makes it much harder for your system to flush out any germs it may pick up on that lengthy flight (because your mucous membranes are dried out). Fortunately, drinking ClearFast is one of the best ways to get hydrated before your flight, as it’s chock-full of electrolytes and offers medical-grade hydration that you won’t find in sports drinks.

It’s also a good idea to stay hydrated once you get to your destination, especially if you’re hitting the beach. Many people underestimate the effect that long bouts of sun exposure can have on their system. Packing a ClearFast or two for your beach day gives your body the electrolytes it needs, while also providing extended energy via 50 grams complex carbs (ensuring you don’t hit a wall in that all-too-common mid-afternoon crash).

  1. Keep Your Eyes Hydrated, Too!

Remember that dry, pressurized plane cabin we talked about? Not only does it dry out your mucus membranes, but it also makes for dry eyes. And we all know what happens when our eyes get dry. They itch like no one’s business. The problem is, touching and rubbing your eyes is one of the fastest ways to transmit viruses. To avoid this, wash your hands frequently—every chance you get before boarding the plane—and bring along lubricating eye drops.

  1. Steer Clear of Eating on Planes

We all know that plane food doesn’t exactly have a spotless reputation when it comes to food health and safety—but there are some less obvious reasons to avoid it as well. Think bringing your own meal keeps you safe? Not exactly—the key isn’t just to avoid plane food; it’s to avoid eating on planes all together. According to research by Travel Math, tray tables are literally the dirtiest place on planes (so you want to avoid touching yours at all costs, regardless if the meal you’re putting on it is from the plane or from your own home). Another good reason to not eat on planes has to do with your body’s ability to digest at 30,000 feet. The dramatic change in pressure often causes your metabolism to slow down significantly. So, when you eat on planes, you’re unable to digest what you’ve taken in—then, you get off the plane and your body suddenly uses up all of its energy stores digesting that meal you ate three hours ago, leaving you feeling tired, depleted and lethargic for the first day of your summer vacation. It may be hard (especially if you have a long flight) but avoid taking in anything besides water on your flight—it will be well worth it when you land at your destination feeling refreshed instead of run-down.

  1. Give your Immune System a Boost

Boosting your immune system before you expose it to the inevitable germs it will encounter at airports and on planes is key to staying healthy while traveling. We recommend eating a healthy breakfast of yogurt for a week leading up to your flight—as yogurt contains beneficial bacteria that can help boost the immune system—and drinking a ClearFast before you leave for the airport for medical-grade hydration. The probiotics in yogurt combine with the electrolytes (for hydration) and Zinc and L-Citrulline (properties that help heal) in ClearFast make for a potent, powerful combination for staying healthy while traveling this summer.

  1. Don’t Skip Exercise

Alright, let’s face it—who wants to wake up early and hit the gym at 6 a.m. on their vacation? Working out while away from home isn’t exactly the most exciting thing ever, but it is a great way to ensure you’re  staying healthy while traveling. Being sedentary for extended periods of time is terrible for our metabolism and circulation (there’s a reason your feet and ankles get super swollen after you’ve been on a plane for six hours!). Plus, if you’re human, chances are you’re indulging in some pretty tasty eats on your vacation—which likely means you’re taking in a ton of salt, another sure-fire way to feel bloated and swollen on your vacation. Exercising—even if it’s just a walk on the beach in the morning—is a great give your body the armor it needs to deal with all of the not so healthy stuff you may be embarking on during your vacation (hello, margaritas at 11 a.m.).

——-

Overall, staying healthy while traveling is all about two main things—staying hydrated and being proactive. ClearFast contains the medical-grade hydration your body needs while traveling and it’s gluten-free, free of simple-sugars and harmful colored dyes, contains all-natural ingredients and is free of preservatives—ultimately making it your best bud for everything from pre-plane to beach-day hydration.

Using ClearFast as a Carb Loading Drink: The Ins-and-Outs of Carb-Loading for Optimal Athletic Performance

Using ClearFast as a Carb Loading Drink: The Ins-and-Outs of Carb-Loading for Optimal Athletic Performance

While ClearFast was developed to make for safer procedures and faster recovery for patients entering surgery, we’ve since found that runners, hot-yogis and endurance athletes are using ClearFast as a carb loading drink (which is awesome!). Today, then, we wanted to cover the ins-and-outs of carb-loading for athletic performance. We’ll discuss:

  • What carb-loading is and how it’s used
  • The difference between simple and complex carbs when carb-loading
  • How to use ClearFast as a carb loading drink

Now, let’s dig in…

What is carb loading and how do athletes use it?

Carb-loading (or “carbo-loading”, as it’s often called) is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: loading up on carbohydrates in the body. Endurance athletes—like long-distance runners and cyclists—use carb-loading to maximize the amount of energy (or glycogen) they have stored in their body. These athletes carb-load before marathons or long rides/races to ensure they don’t hit that dreaded wall (i.e. run out of energy) during their long and trying event.

What’s the difference between simple and complex carbs as it relates to carb-loading?

Simple carbohydrates are sugars that are broken down and absorbed quickly by your body. Simple carbohydrates are found in things like: candy, sports drinks, table sugars, honey, sodas and fruit. Simple sugars are a good option for when you need a quick energy boost—but they’re also unfortunately often followed by a serious sugar crash, which means they’re not exactly ideal for proper carb-loading for a long athletic event.

Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, are made up of a grouping of sugar molecules. You’ll find complex carbs in things like: oatmeal, brown rice, whole-wheat bread, green vegetables, beans, lentils, and—yes!—ClearFast. Complex carbs tend to be much more effective for carb-loading, as our bodies break down and absorb complex carbohydrates at a much slower rate than simple carbs—giving us a constant, reliable source of energy for an extended period of time. If you need a quick boost of energy that lasts a few minutes, simple carbs are the way to go. If you’re looking to properly carb-load for a long marathon or cycle, on the other hand, complex carbohydrates are a much more reliable source of energy.

How do athletes use ClearFast as a carb loading drink?

Because ClearFast contains 50 full grams of complex carbs, it’s the perfect carb loading drink to consume before a big race, marathon, cycle, or long hot yoga class. High-performance athletes like to consume ClearFast before they embark on their athletic event as part of their carb-loading routine.

In addition to containing a great amount of complex carbs to get you through your endurance event, ClearFast is also gluten-free, contains all natural ingredients, is free of harmful colored dyes, is free of preservatives, and is chock-full of a number of other ingredients that can be beneficial to your athletic performance, including:

  • Electrolytes (for optimal hydration)
  • Zinc and L-Citrulline (properties that help heal)
  • Vitamin A (supports health and tissue function)
  • Selenium (a trace mineral that acts as an antioxidant and contributes to healthy immune function)

———

Overall, using ClearFast as a carb loading drink is the perfect option for those who are seeking extended energy for their athletic event, without having to consume crazy amounts of high-calorie, high-sugar, preservative-laced foods that contain harmful colored dyes and other unnatural ingredients.

Clear Liquid Before Surgery: The Meaning Behind the ClearFast Name & Why It Matters for Safer Surgery

Clear Liquid Before Surgery: The Meaning Behind the ClearFast Name & Why It Matters for Safer Surgery

What’s in a name? Turns out, a whole lot, actually. With a name like ClearFast, we often get asked if our drink is a laxative (spoiler alert: it’s not!), so we wanted to take some time today to explain the meaning behind our product’s name and—more importantly—to cover what in the world its name has to do with safer surgery. Today, we’ll cover:

  • What the name “ClearFast” means
  • Why a pre-surgery drink needs to be formulated to clear from your stomach in a timely manner
  • Why drinking clear liquid before surgery ultimately makes for safer surgeries
  • How ClearFast is designed to clear from your stomach fast and reduce your risk of a dangerous surgery

Now, let’s dig in…

What does the name ClearFast mean?

The name ClearFast comes from the idea that our pre-surgery drink is formulated to clear from your stomach, fast. (Another handy way to look at it is this: it’s a clear liquid for your pre-surgery fast). The name actually has nothing to do with the product being a laxative at all! Why, though, does it matter if something clears from your stomach fast? We break that down below, so read on!

Why does my pre-surgery drink need to clear from my stomach fast?

One of the main reasons patients are instructed to not eat or drink anything after midnight before their surgery is because matter left behind in the stomach can put a patient at risk of aspiration during surgery. Aspiration is essentially the entry of your stomach contents into the lower respiratory tract and lungs, which can be very dangerous when you’re under anesthesia. Modern medical research has concluded, though, that patients who drank clear liquid before surgery had even emptier stomachs than patients who didn’t eat or drink anything before their surgery, ultimately reducing their risk of aspiration.

How does drinking clear liquid before surgery leave you with an emptier stomach than if you didn’t drink anything at all?

So how, exactly, does drinking clear liquid before surgery leave patients with an emptier stomach than not eating or drinking anything at all? It does sound a bit counterintuitive, after all! Turns out, when we fast from midnight (the outdated rule), an empty, hungry stomach can cause a buildup of gastric acids. Recent studies have shown that patients entering surgery after using a clear liquid like ClearFast have lower acidity of stomach contents than those who fasted and, therefore, a reduced risk of aspiration under anesthesia. In short, drinking clear liquid before surgery is proven to leave you with an emptier stomach, which makes for safer surgery.

So what makes ClearFast clear from my stomach fast?

In order to ensure safer surgery and reduced risk of aspiration, the pre-surgery drink you choose needs to be specially formulated to clear from your stomach fast. This has to do with something called osmolarity. Osmolarity is essentially the concentration of a substance (in this case, complex carbohydrates) in a solution (the drink itself). Lower osmolarity leads to faster gastric emptying times…which ultimately leads to a reduced risk of aspiration and safer overall surgery.

ClearFast has an ideal osmolarity of 270 mOsm, which makes for timely gastric emptying. (Sports drinks, on the other hand, have a high osmolarity of around 330 mOsm, which means they stay in your stomach way too long to be considered safe to use as a pre-surgery drink.) Overall, ClearFast was specially formulated to address physicians’ concerns (the concern of patients entering into surgery with left-behind stomach contents) and make for safer, easier surgeries for patients by allowing them to nourish and hydrate before surgery rather than starve themselves after midnight. (Psst…you can also read more about everything ClearFast does to make for more comfortable surgeries—including reducing your risk of post-op nausea and vomiting—here.)

Overall, drinking the right clear liquid before surgery is such a simple and easy way to get a leg up on the dreaded surgery and recovery process. Ready to give ClearFast a try? Preparing for Surgery with ClearFast: Your Top 5 Questions Answered

Preparing for Surgery with ClearFast: Your Top 5 Questions Answered

One of the most exciting things about ClearFast is that our team gets to be on the forefront of a major shift in the way the medical industry looks at preparing for surgery—we’re now at a time where doctors are recommending patients nourish and hydrate before surgery instead of offering up the old-fashioned advice to fast after midnight (you can read more about that shift here.)

Being on the front lines of this exciting new medical research and overall shift in pre-surgery practices means we also have a number of questions to answer from eager patients. We hear, time and time again, from patients who are ready to undergo and awake from anesthesia feeling stronger and calmer—but who still have some questions about how ClearFast works when preparing for surgery. Today, then, we’re answering your top five ClearFast questions.

1. Can I drink ClearFast if I have diabetes?

We get this one all of the time, and we’ll start by saying that every patient is different and that it’s always best to talk to your doctor. That being said, more and more research has shown that preparing for surgery with diabetes can be made more comfortable and safe with the simple addition of a clear, complex-carb preop drink like ClearFast. There are four main reasons ClearFast makes for safer, more comfortable surgery for diabetics:

  • It protects your critical glycogen stores: By providing your body the complex carbs it needs for energy, drinking ClearFast before surgery helps to ensure your body isn’t using up all of those ever-important glycogen stores.
  • It takes into account a diabetic’s ongoing nutritional requirements: By working ClearFast into your surgery prep routine and closely monitoring your blood sugar levels as part of the prep process, you’re working with—rather than completely ignoring—your body’s critical nutritional requirements.
  • It reduces your chance of pre-op complications: Prolonged fasting before surgery for diabetics induces a catabolic state where the body first exhausts its limited hepatic glycogen stores and then proceeds to breakdown fat and muscle as alternative energy sources. This can ultimately lead to complications like hypoglycemia and even ketoacidosis (a serious complication that develops when your body can’t produce enough insulin). Preparing your body for surgery with ClearFast helps to reduce the risk of using up all of those important glycogen stores and ending up in one of those two unsafe states.
  • It reduces your chance of post-op complications: Numerous studies have found that pre-op carb-loading with a complex carb-rich, clear preop drink like ClearFast can reduce your risk of post-op insulin resistance and post-op infections, as well as reduce the occurrence of post-op vomiting—all of which make managing your blood-sugar difficult, posing particular danger for those with diabetes.

2. Does the name ClearFast mean it’s a laxative?

Nope! This is another question we hear often—but, not to fear, the name ClearFast doesn’t mean it clears you out fast. Instead, “ClearFast” refers to the beverage’s osmolarity. In order to be safe to use before surgery, the preop drink you choose should be formulated to clear from your stomach, fast. ClearFast has an ideal osmolarity level, allowing for timely gastric emptying and ultimately—you guessed it—clearing from your stomach, fast. Another great way to think of the name is that it’s a clear liquid for your pre-op fast.

3. What if my doctor tells me to fast before surgery? Can I still ask her or him about ClearFast?

Each surgery and every patient is different, so you should always consult your doctor when it comes to your specific guidelines for preparing for surgery. That being said, there’s tons of research out there that concludes fasting before surgery isn’t the safest option and that patients should, instead, prepare for surgery with a clear, complex carb-rich beverage. We recommend checking out our blog on talking to your doctor about ClearFast before you head to your pre-op appointment.

4. What’s in ClearFast that makes for faster healing?

That’s a great question! ClearFast PreOp is ideally formulated for surgical patients who want to improve recovery after surgery. It contains six essential nutrients (complex carbohydrates, electrolytes, Vitamin A, Selenium, Zinc, L-citrulline) to nourish, hydrate and help heal the body. This unique formula works to:

  • Reduce your risk of post-op nausea and vomiting
  • Reduce dehydration and hunger
  • Ensure easier, less painful IV “sticks”
  • Give you an edge on recovery (Zinc and L-citrulline work to heal you faster by promoting healthy circulation and nitric oxide production, while Vitamin-A helps support healthy tissue functioncombined, these properties make for a faster, easier recovery process!)

5. Can I just drink a clear sports drink instead?

Not exactly. There are tons of reasons why ClearFast is different from and better than sports drinks when it comes to preparing for surgery (and you can read them all here). Two main reasons sports drinks won’t cut it for enhanced recovery include:

  • They contain zero complex carbs: Complex carbs are a key part of ensuring enhanced recovery after surgery. Sports drinks are chock-full of simple sugars, which don’t nourish you when preparing for surgery.
  • They have high osmolarity: Osmolarity affects gastric emptying times, and higher osmolarity can mean delayed emptying (which isn’t good when it comes to preparing your body for surgery). A typical sports drink has an osmolarity of around 330 mOsm, which can lead to delayed gastric emptying. ClearFast, on the other hand, has an ideal osmolarity of 270 mOsm and is formulated to safely clear from the stomach in around 90 minutes, making it an ideal choice for pre-op carbohydrate loading.
